Taco quality here isn't about the fancy address. Some of the best ones in town come out of a truck on Fillmore or a strip-mall counter off Austin Bluffs. Here are our go-tos, from a sit-down margarita spot to the early-morning counters.

Birria & the northwest

Por Favor Tacos & Tragos

📍 Northwest · 4657 Centennial Blvd., Suite 100

Why go: A small, family-run taco shop whose birria taco plate got a "not to be missed" from the Gazette's critic.

Order: The birria taco plate: beef simmered overnight in adobo, tucked into fried tacos with cheese, with the cooking broth on the side for dipping. Start with the elotes. There are 13 fillings to pick from.

Good to know: The Gazette lists hours as 11 a.m.–9 p.m. daily.

Don Turi's Tacos y Tortas

📍 Northwest · 4423 Centennial Blvd.

Why go: Tortillas made fresh every day, and a quesabirria that the shop says "started the word-of-mouth."

Order: Quesabirria tacos with consommé for dipping. Mornings, go for a breakfast burrito.

Good to know: It opens at 8 a.m. every day, which makes it a solid pre-Garden of the Gods stop. Tuesday has a dine-in taco deal when you buy a drink.

Downtown

Dos Santos

📍 Downtown · 70 E. Moreno Ave.

Why go: Scratch-made tacos with salsas, guac and sauces made in house daily. Readers voted it the runner-up in the Gazette's 2025 Taco Takedown.

Order: Tacos plus a margarita flight (spicy passion fruit, blood orange, green chili or hibiscus). On weekends, chilaquiles at brunch.

Good to know: Happy hour runs 3–6 p.m. every day and all day Monday.

East & north

El Chapin

📍 Central/east · 1228 E. Fillmore St.

Why go: Gazette readers crowned this family-owned spot the 2025 Taco Takedown champion.

Order: The 3 street tacos or the quesabirrias. It also does burgers and thick shakes if someone in your crew isn't a taco person.

Good to know: Outdoor tables, and dogs are welcome. Closed Sundays.

Taco's Revolution

📍 Northeast · 7095 Austin Bluffs Pkwy., at the north end of the Safeway strip mall (Austin Bluffs and Dublin)

Why go: A fast-casual newcomer that drew a crowd of regulars within months. The Gazette's critic had "only praise" for the food.

Order: The carnitas plate and an al pastor taco. The Revolution burrito, with steak and cactus, is massive.

Good to know: Open 8 a.m.–9 p.m. daily. It's tucked behind the arched facade, so look closely.

Moctezuma Mexican Grill

📍 East · 1015 N. Academy Blvd. (in the old Boston Market). The original food truck still parks at 5690 N. Union Blvd.

Why go: A food truck with a cult following since 2022 that finally got its own restaurant in 2026.

Order: The Guadalajara-style birria. The Gazette says don't miss it.

Good to know: The truck's spot can change, so confirm its location on the website before you go.

Monica's Taco Shop

📍 East · 5829 Palmer Park Blvd.

Why go: No-frills counter service for decades, open early, with salsas regulars rave about.

Order: A breakfast burrito or tacos with the salsa verde.

Good to know: Open Mon–Sat 5 a.m.–10 p.m. and Sun 7 a.m.–8 p.m. The E. Fillmore St. location has been listed as temporarily closed since June 2026, so head to Palmer Park.
